House Passes Congressman Keith Self’s Bill to Rename Plano VA Clinic in Honor of Congressman Sam Johnson
Today, the House of Representatives passed Congressman Keith Self’s bill to rename the Department of Veterans Affairs community-based outpatient clinic in Plano, Texas, the ‘‘U.S. Congressman Sam Johnson Memorial VA Clinic.”
Congressman Sam Johnson, a retired Air Force Colonel and highly decorated fighter pilot, demonstrated extraordinary courage and resilience throughout his military and public service careers. During a combat mission over North Vietnam, Johnson was shot down and sustained a broken right arm, broken back, and dislocated shoulder. Imprisoned and tortured in Vietnam for nearly seven years, including 42 months in solitary confinement, Johnson never gave in to his captors and was recognized as one of the “Alcatraz Gang,” a POW group known for their unbreakable spirit and determination to survive.
“Sam’s unparalleled grit and warrior’s heart were beyond measure. Naming this facility after a hero like Sam Johnson will ensure that his legacy of unyielding patriotism will be carried forward to remind future generations of his courage as they receive needed care through the VA,” Congressman Keith Self said.
Johnson’s remarkable service was recognized with numerous awards including two Silver Stars, two Legions of Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Star, and two Purple Hearts.
After a distinguished 29-year career in the United States Air Force, Johnson continued his dedication to the public in the Texas State House of Representatives, where he served until being elected to Congress, where he served until his retirement in 2019.
On the House Floor, Congressman Self said, “I truly can think of no individual that is more deserving of having a VA Clinic named in his honor.”
