Congressman Keith Self Calls for Oversight Regarding Expanded Use of ATACMS by Ukraine
Congressman Keith Self sent a letter to President Joe Biden, condemning his authorization of Ukraine’s use of long-range Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) to strike inside Russia.
The United States Congress has not declared war against Russia nor passed an Authorization of Military Force against Russia. In addition, President Biden has authorized use of US weapons systems by a non-ally nation against one of the United States’ primary strategic adversaries—thereby endangering 338 million US citizens and potentially triggering Article 5 of the NATO Treaty.
In his letter, Congressman Self asked the White House for a classified briefing prior to Monday, November 25, 2024, regarding full details of the administration’s agreement on Ukraine’s stipulated rules of engagement with regard to the long-range ATACMS. If the briefing is not provided, Congressman Self will immediately move for further oversight.
“These are the most dangerous days America has faced since the Cuban Missile Crisis,” said Congressman Keith Self. “President Biden has authorized a nation—that is not our ally in any legal sense of the word—to attack deep into the territory of one of our major adversaries. I understand the horrors of strategic nuclear war, and it is striking to me that during this sensitive phase of the Ukraine conflict, our political and military leaders are not dialed in on the potential disastrous ramifications of escalating the conflict.”
While on active duty during the Cold War, Congressman Self stood strategic nuclear watch, responsible for launching strategic nuclear weapons on order of the National Command Authority.
