The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation. For more information, please review the page of Frequently Asked Questions for those seeking a Military Academy Nomination.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), West Point, NY; the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA), Annapolis, MD; the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA), Colorado Springs, CO; and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA), Kings Point, NY. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), New London, CT, does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

Service Academies Information Forum

Explore the opportunities available at the United States Service Academies! We invite all 8th-12th grade students, recent graduates, their families, and school administrators living in Texas' Third Congressional District to join us. Attendance for juniors seeking a Service Academy Nomination is highly encouraged.

Service Academy Application for Nomination

For your application packet to be considered, please follow the process outlined here. For physical packet submissions, please hand deliver to the McKinney District Office located at 4500 Eldorado Parkway, Suite 3500, McKinney, TX 75070 OR please email full packet documents to: self.nominations@mail.house.gov. Please do NOT mail your materials, as mail is easily lost or delayed. Please save all documents as a PDF file and name them as designated in this example:  Last name, First initial_Application. 

Recommendation letters should be an emailed PDF and submitted directly to our McKinney office from the person completing the recommendation at self.nominations@mail.house.gov. The Recommendation letters CANNOT BE SUBMITTED BY THE APPLICANT. Once a letter of recommendation for you has been received, you will receive a confirmation email.

Please note, our application deadline is November 3, 2025, at 5pm CT. This means every document for your application should be received before that time – including recommendation letters and ACT/SAT scores.

Timeline:

• March 3, 2025 – Application for Class of 2030 opens
• November 3, 2025, at 5PM CST- All application materials must be received by the office of Rep. Self
• November/December 2025- Applicant review process/in-person interviews scheduled and conducted 
• January 2026 - All Congressional nominations will be finalized & submitted to all U.S. Service Academies

Before submitting your packet, utilize the following checklist to ensure you have followed the instructions. You can find the application file links at the bottom of this page. * Items marked with an asterisk should come from a transcript site, another person, or the SAT/ACT portal. These are not to be submitted by the applicant directly.

Required Application Checklist:

• Application Packet (Last Name, First Initial_Application Packet)
• Resume (Last Name, First Initial_Resume)
• Essay (Last Name, First Initial_Essay)
• Short Answer Questionnaire (Last Name, First Initial_Short Answer)
• YouTube Video link (unlisted emailed to Self.Nominations@mail.house.gov)
• Copy of your Senior Class Schedule (Last Name, First Initial_Senior Schedule)
• Official School Transcripts * - to be submitted by school(s) and including GPA, Class Ranking, Class Size, & Graduating Year if applicable
• Copy or copies of official SAT and/or ACT scores *- to be submitted through the portals with the below DI Codes by the applicant
  • SAT Math, Writing, Critical Writing, Composite (SAT Score Reporting DI Code is 6061)
  • ACT Math, Reading, Science, Composite (ACT Score Reporting DI Code is 7684)
• Recommendation Letters *
  • Three completed personal recommendation letters:
    • One from a School Representative (Teacher, Principal, School Administrator, Director, Coach, Counselor, or other school representative)
    • One from a Community Member (Neighbor, family friend, employer, scout leader, etc.)
    • One from a Religious or Service Organization Leader (Religious leader, rotary member, etc.)
