Congressman Keith Self Introduces Bill Expanding Religious Rights and Freedoms of Veterans
Congressman Self introduced the Enhancing Faith-Based Support for Veterans Act, which will allow chaplains within the Department of Veterans’ Affairs (VA), after getting patient consent, to transmit the contact information of the Veteran to a non-Department religious or faith-based organization specified by the Veteran.
Currently, VA chaplains are restricted from transmitting patient information to outside organizations, even when a Veteran asks to be connected to their home church, synagogue, or other religious community. This bill closes that gap by ensuring Veterans can stay connected to their faith networks during times of illness, recovery, or crisis.
“Veterans deserve care that addresses the whole person,” Congressman Self said. “For many Veterans, spiritual care is just as important as the physical and mental care they receive. By facilitating voluntary religious connections, this bill will strengthen the network of support available to those who serve our nation.”
The Enhancing Faith-Based Support for Veterans Act ensures:
• Patient Choice First – Veterans must explicitly request that their information be shared; nothing is automatic or mandatory.
• Holistic Care – Builds stronger connections between VA treatment and the Veteran’s chosen faith community.
• Privacy Protections – Ensures compliance with HIPAA and safeguards against any government endorsement of religion.
By bridging the gap between the VA and local faith communities, the bill reflects a commitment to honoring Veterans’ freedom of religion while expanding the resources available to them.
