Congressman Keith Self Sends Letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) Condemning Proposed Restriction on the Sale of Firearms

September 15, 2023

Today, Congressman Keith Self sent a letter to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), along with 52 other members of the U.S. House of Representatives, regarding the agency’s new proposed rule to restrict the rights of Americans to sell firearms.

The rule would expand the reach of licensing requirements for private individuals who occasionally sell firearms. Law-abiding Americans would be subjected to unnecessary fees, background checks, fingerprinting, and hours of bureaucratic red tape – in addition to existing state and local regulations.

“Time and again, this administration has demonstrated blatant disregard for the Constitution,” said Congressman Keith Self. “If the ATF goes forward with this draconian rule, they would be infringing upon the Second Amendment rights of every American and diametrically opposing the intent and will of Congress. It’s an act of tyranny that we cannot tolerate.”

In addition to rebuking the rule, Congressman Self is also requesting an explanation on how such restrictions would have any tangible effect on reducing criminal activities.

“Treating law-abiding gun owners like federally licensed gun stores is nonsensical. The Second Amendment is clear, concise, and should not be trampled upon by bureaucrats,” said Congressman Keith Self.
