Congressman Keith Self Takes on “Ghost Jobs”

September 27, 2024

Congressman Keith Self wrote a letter to Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su regarding the rise of "ghost jobs.” A constituent in Texas District 3 brought this issue to light.

"Ghost jobs" are listings that appear to be genuine employment opportunities designed to attract applicants but remain open indefinitely because employers do not intend to fill the roles. A concerning report surveyed 1,000 hiring managers in October 2023 and highlighted the growing prevalence of ghost jobs. Hiring managers cited several reasons for posting these. Some wanted to create the impression that their company was growing, while others aimed to reassure overworked staff by signaling that help was on the way. Another group admitted they left job listings open, hoping their dream candidate might eventually apply.

“It is frustrating that Americans spend considerable time and effort applying for positions, only to discover that the job does not exist,” said Congressman Keith Self. “Not only does it decrease workforce participation, but it is possible that these ghost jobs are affecting our unemployment figures and labor demand projections that drive major policy decisions.”

In his letter, Congressman Self asked how the Department of Labor is addressing this issue and what future collaborations may be needed to mitigate the negative impact of ghost jobs on workers and the labor market.

“We must ensure that workers have access to genuine employment opportunities and are not left in limbo.”
