Following Months of Cooperation with Congressman Self, European Allies Announce Sanctions Against Iran's National Carrier Airline

September 12, 2024

The United Kingdom, Germany, and France announced new sanctions against Iran as well as the regime’s national carrier, Iran Air. This development culminated following a months-long effort by Congressman Keith Self to convince our European allies to cease doing business with this company.

By way of background, on November 14, 2023, Congressman Self introduced House Resolution 862, urging European Allies to sanction Iranian airlines and deny them airport access. Later in March of 2024, Congressman Self sent letters to seven countries calling for travel restrictions and asset freezes against Iran Air. This resulted in meetings with high-ranking officials from Germany and the United Kingdom, as well as a meeting with French representatives scheduled at a later date. These conversations have been ongoing up until the sanction’s announcement on September 10, 2024.

“I applaud our allies for upholding the security of our countries by imposing new sanctions against Iran and their national carrier, Iran Air. This nefarious company is playing a significant role in advancing Iran’s destabilizing activities throughout the world and must be denied business,” said Congressman Keith Self.

This airline, which has preferential treatment by Iran, has proliferated Iranian-backed terrorist organizations, supplied Russia in their war against Ukraine, and aided Syrian dictator Bashar Al-Assad at the height of his administration’s oppression.

“Our deterrence campaign against adversarial forces is far from over, but there is nothing our enemies can do to prevail when we work together as allies. I am now calling once more on Italy, Austria, Azerbaijan, and Turkey to follow suit and cease doing business with Iran Air,” said Congressman Self.
